Local Teens to compete in Hip-Hop Dance Competition at Pacific
Pacific Student Group to sponsor event
(Stockton, Calif.) – Local teenagers will get to display their best urban dance moves to the latest hit rap songs during a Hip-Hop dance competition at University of the Pacific on Sunday, April 20. The annual event will take place at 6 p.m. in the Faye Spanos Concert Hall. Admission is $10.
The Pacific student group Rhythm Inc., is organizing the competition, called Breakthrough, which will feature teenage groups (age 18 and under) from the Stockton area and include at least one group from Southern California. Local youth dance groups can still register at (http://RhythmInc.tk). Organizers expect up to 200 dancers to compete.
"The purpose of the event is to help promote creativity, to have participants recognize the teamwork and time commitment in putting together such dance pieces, and to establish a better dance community and network for those who aren't able to travel," said Cyndy Nguyen, president and director/team captain of Rhythm Inc.
Rhythm Inc. originated from a campus community council group in the Price-Werner-& Farley Residential Halls. Resident Assistant, Venus Shariff, decided to have the PWF community compete in the university's annual Homecoming/Lipsync competition in 2004 and 2005. Ever since then the group has grown and worked to boost audience attendance and gain support from the public.
The group currently has members from Pacific, San Joaquin Delta College, and high school students from the Stockton area. The diverse membership is part of the group's outreach efforts to both the campus and Stockton communities. A YouTube video of past peformances by Rhythm Inc. can be viewed on the group's website.
